Library Research Instruction
Coulter Library provides hands-on library and information literacy instruction customized for your students' needs. These sessions can include: using subject-specific databases, library research strategies, library services and more. Classes may be scheduled in the library classroom or in your regular classroom. Online library instruction is also available for online courses.
Librarians can also collaborate with the faculty to design research assignments or other instructional content to include in their courses.
Credit Courses
The library also offers a one-credit course, LIB 110, where students learn how to locate, evaluate, and access high-quality information.
Library Visit
Some professors choose a library visit with no research instruction. You are always welcome, but please let us know in advance so we can inform staff members.
Embed YouTube Videos in D2L-Brightspace
- Locate the YouTube video and copy the URL. You do not need the embed code. The URL is sufficient.
- Go to your Brightspace course where you would like to place the video.
- In your module, choose to Upload/Create then Video or Audio.
- A pop-up window will open where you can paste the URL you copied. The video title and a preview will automatically appear. Edit the title if needed. Click Save.
Acquisitions Policy: Broadly stated, the goals of Coulter Library are to assist our students and our colleagues in the search for understanding, to serve as an oasis for lifelong learning, and to nourish and protect our students' love of learning. Consequently, our primary purpose in acquiring library materials is to facilitate learning, particularly learning that is keyed to or sparked by the curricular interests, personal needs, and growing awareness of each member of the community we serve.
Faculty can request the purchase of library resources by emailing l.m.hoff@sunyocc.edu with the subject line Acquisitions.
Course reserves are items (including books, DVDs, CDs, A/V items, journal articles and/or photocopies, electronic resources, instructional equipment, and non-book items) chosen by instructors to support class instruction. The items are maintained in a separate location within the library, and access to the item is more restricted than is the access to items in general circulation.
The purpose of a reserve collection is to:

support OCC's instructors and/or departments toward access of items stated above;

provide timely, convenient, and efficient access to high-demand items; and

make textbooks more readily available.
The library encourages the incorporation of a variety of course content through our course reserve system. The service is provided in a manner that respects the rights of copyright holders and the limitations to those rights as specified in current copyright law (See Copyright Guidelines for more information).
Faculty and staff can place items on reserve in person at the Course Reserve Desk, located on the 2nd Floor of Coulter Library. Also, if an extra copy of your textbook is available consider placing it on reserve (students frequently inquire about the availability of textbooks).
To see a listing of current course reserves, visit the Course Reserves page and search for a specific course. You can search by course number, for example EDU104 (no spaces), or by the instructor name.

The Library Research Awards Committee invites the submission of papers written during the current academic year. First, second and third place recipients will receive cash awards [$250, $150 and $100] and be recognized for their academic achievement during the final faculty meeting of the Spring 2022 semester.
Any member of the OCC faculty may submit student research papers, after obtaining the student's permission to do so. Submission must come from a faculty member. If a student would like to submit a paper, s/he should contact the faculty member who assigned the paper.
Guidelines
Criteria for selection: in addition to "quality and effectiveness" the committee is especially eager to read papers that show students "catching the fire" of research and writing. "Catching the fire" is our way of describing what happens when students dive - headlong and with gusto! - into a critical examination of vital questions or issues. We are looking for papers that go beyond the mere reporting of the results of their research.
Submissions should include: the paper, a cover sheet containing the student's name, faculty member's name, the course and section number and a copy of the writing assignment.
Papers ("clean" copies only, please) and cover sheets should be submitted to Michelle Malinovsky, Committee Chair, on or before May 15, 2023.
